What is your MBTI? Posted on 19. Jul. 2022

In Korea, it is not unusual to be asked what your blood type is. Foreigners who do not know the reason may have wondered why Koreans are curious about their blood type, or in some cases, it is not uncommon for foreigners not to know what their blood type is. Why then do Koreans (not all, but some) ask about blood type? In Korea, some people believe that personality types have been classified into four types according to blood type. Depending on the blood type,

there is a unique personality that a person is born with, and this is consistent with the belief that there are common tendencies for each constellation in the West. In the past, in Korea, when meeting a person for the first time,

to determine a person's personality type, they were asked what blood type they had, and they decided that it would be that kind of person by fitting the characteristics of each blood type to that person. However, recently, rather than

asking about the blood type, there are many cases of asking the person's MBTI. Then what is MBTI?

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) assessment is one of the world’s most popular personality tools used by more than 88 percent of Fortune 500 companies in 115 countries, and available in 29 languages. Through a series of

questions, the MBTI assessment helps people identify their natural preferences in four areas of personality:

«   How do you direct and receive energy—by focusing on the outside world, interacting with people and taking action, or by focusing on your inner world and reflecting on ideas, memories, and experiences?

«   How do you take in information—by focusing on what you perceive using your five senses or by seeing the big picture and looking for relationships and patterns?

«   How do you decide and come to conclusions—by logically analyzing the situation or by considering what’s important to the people involved?

«   How do you approach the outside world—in a planned, orderly way or a more flexible, spontaneous way?

The natural preferences in these four areas sort people into one of 16 distinct MBTI personality types. Understanding these types gives people objective insight that they can use to enhance their professional and personal relationships.

However, this personality test made 80 years ago suddenly started to become popular in Korean society as a result of the spread of the “Untact” culture due to Corona 19 and the characteristics of the MZ(*Millennials and Gen Z)

generation, who mainly communicate online. The craze of self-discovery, curious about who I am and with whom I am a good fit, is by no means a new phenomenon. The phenomenon of predicting a person's personality and future with

the four main characters and assigning personality or inclinations to a constellation or blood type to evaluate and define others has been going on for a long time. However, as time passed, it became known that the constellation

and blood type had nothing to do with personality. In particular, it has become popular as the Internet simple test that can measure MBTI in less than 10 minutes has spread.

The point is that the reliability of the MBTI itself is not high, and it is not desirable to define a person based on specific test results. Statistically, there is a weakness in that the personality distribution is not divided into distinctly different

groups. For example, the extrovert (E) and introvert (I) groups do not exist separately, but form a single normal distribution. It is a classification of people into different groups based on their slight bias to one side due to the slight

difference in scores. In addition, as it is a self-reporting psychological test that evaluates one's own behavior, the results may vary each time it is performed. However, simple free internet tests such as '16Personalities', which are not

official MBTI tests, are even less reliable. Also, some point out that one should not lose the purpose of self-discovery by becoming too immersed in the means of personality test itself.

It is obvious that everyone's personality is very different. The classification cannot be determined by a few questions. However, it is clear that the MBTI is blowing in Korea, and it is definitely a good tool to use as a topic of conversation

when making new relationships with people around you. Take 10 minutes to check your MBTI and set up a conversation topic.
